About Speak Australia

We built Speak Australia because we believe language learning is one of the most transformative things an Australian can do โ€” and we wanted to make it more accessible, more practical, and more connected to Australian life.

Why We Created Speak Australia

Australia sits at the heart of the Asia-Pacific โ€” geographically, economically, and culturally. Our closest neighbours speak Japanese, Indonesian, Korean. Our fastest-growing trading relationships are with countries whose languages most Australians cannot speak a word of. Our cities are home to some of the world's largest diaspora communities from Japan, Korea, Indonesia, and Ukraine. And yet the resources available to Australian language learners have historically been generic โ€” designed for a global English-speaking audience with no particular connection to Australia's unique position in the world.

Speak Australia was created to fix that. Every guide on this site is written with the Australian learner specifically in mind โ€” Australia's trading relationships with Japan and Korea, the million-plus Australians who visit Bali every year, the vibrant Ukrainian community across Melbourne and Sydney, the Indonesian language programs that Australian schools and universities have offered longer than almost anywhere else in the English-speaking world. We write about language learning from the perspective of people who live here, work here, and understand what makes learning languages in Australia different from learning them anywhere else.

Who We Created It For

Speak Australia is for every Australian who has ever wanted to learn a language but wasn't sure where to start โ€” or who started and got lost in the overwhelming volume of resources with no guidance on what's actually worth using.

๐Ÿ–๏ธ The Bali Regular

The Australian who visits Indonesia every year and wants to do more than point at the menu. Indonesian is the most accessible Asian language for English speakers and a single year of casual study transforms the experience entirely.

๐Ÿ“บ The K-Drama Fan

The Australian hooked on Korean dramas, K-pop, and Korean food who wants to experience it without subtitles. Hangul takes a week to learn, and the rest of the journey is deeply rewarding.

๐ŸŽŒ The Japan Lover

The Australian who visits Japan, eats at Japanese restaurants, watches anime, or works with Japanese companies โ€” and wants to connect more deeply with one of Australia's most important relationships.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ The Heritage Learner

The Ukrainian-Australian who wants to connect with their family's language and culture, or the Australian moved by Ukraine's story who wants to express solidarity in the most direct way possible.

๐Ÿ’ผ The Career Builder

The Australian professional who recognises that language skills open doors in trade, diplomacy, tourism, education, and business in ways that English alone simply cannot.

๐Ÿง  The Language Enthusiast

The Australian who simply loves learning languages โ€” who finds joy in the process of acquiring a new way of thinking, a new cultural lens, a new set of connections with other human beings.

The Languages We Cover

๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต

Japanese

Australia's 2nd-largest export market

๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท

Korean

4th-largest export market

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฉ

Indonesian

Australia's closest major neighbour

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

Ukrainian

One of the world's largest diasporas here

We chose these four languages deliberately. Each has a specific, compelling reason for Australians to learn it โ€” geographic proximity, economic relationship, cultural presence, or diaspora community. These aren't arbitrary choices; they are the languages that matter most to Australia's present and future in the Asia-Pacific and beyond.

Our Approach

Everything on Speak Australia is written to be practical, honest, and specific. We don't promise fluency in 30 days. We don't pretend language learning is easy. We do promise to give you accurate information about what's involved, realistic timelines, honest assessments of resources, and culturally contextualised guidance that understands why an Australian is learning this language and what they specifically need to succeed.

Where we earn affiliate commissions on products we recommend (textbooks, apps, courses), we disclose this transparently โ€” see our Terms and Conditions. We only recommend things we genuinely believe are worth your time and money. Our reputation depends on your trust far more than on any commission.
