But South Korea is a country of extraordinary regional diversity — ancient capitals, volcanic islands, rugged mountain ranges, slow coastal villages, Buddhist temple complexes set deep in forested valleys. Regional Dialects: A Traveller's Overview

Korean has distinct regional dialects (방언, bangyeon or 사투리, saturi) that differ from the Seoul-based standard (표준어, pyojuneo) in vocabulary, grammar, and intonation. Here's what to expect in each major region:

Gyeongsang-do (경상도) — Busan, Daegu, and southeastern Korea:

Gyeongsang dialect is the most phonologically distinctive regional Korean, with a pitch accent system (tonal distinctions) absent from Seoul Korean. The same syllable pronounced with different pitch can have different meanings. For travelers, the main effect is that Gyeongsang speakers sometimes sound more blunt or direct than Seoul speakers — the intonation patterns can sound clipped to unaccustomed ears, though this is purely phonological rather than attitudinal.

Jeju-do (제주도):

Jeju's traditional language — Jejueo (제주어) — is technically classified as a separate language rather than a dialect, and is critically endangered with only a few hundred fully fluent elderly speakers remaining. Day-to-day communication in Jeju is in standard Korean, and younger generations speak essentially Seoul-standard Korean. You will not need Jejueo phrases for travel, but knowing of its existence is culturally respectful.

Jeju Island: Language and Practical Phrases

Jeju Island (제주도) — a volcanic island off Korea's southern coast — is South Korea's most popular domestic tourism destination and receives millions of international visitors annually. It's genuinely unlike the mainland: the landscape is dramatic (Hallasan, the country's highest peak, dominates the island), the seafood is extraordinary, and the pace is noticeably slower.

Getting around Jeju:

Unlike most Korean cities, Jeju requires a rental car or significant planning for public transport. The island's bus system has improved but remains limited compared to mainland Korean public transit.
